A Troubling Double Death

A Troubling Double Death
The scene
Alan Pangborn finds Nettle Cobb and Wilma Jerzyck dead after their violent confrontation. The apparent feud seems to explain the crime, but its sequence troubles him.
An investigator’s doubt
He cannot imagine Nettle methodically preparing the rocks and warning notes attributed to her. His unease persists despite the apparently straightforward evidence.
A Child’s Cooler

A Child’s Cooler
Questioning Brian
Alan finds Brian Rusk after learning a boy with a picnic cooler left the Jerzyck house during the rock attack. Brian gives a composed account that does not satisfy him.
A frightened witness
The boy appears exhausted and terrified, but does not confess or explain what he knows. Alan senses a larger force constraining him and lets him go, intending to continue later.
A Sudden Cascade

A Sudden Cascade
Separate emergencies
Alan learns that Hugh Priest is implicated in the earlier deaths, then finds new violence unfolding at the sheriff’s office and elsewhere in town.
Local control collapses
More killings, a missing Norris Ridgewick, and a fugitive Danforth Keeton overwhelm the original investigation. State Police take charge, leaving Alan without his usual authority or a clear explanation.
Sean Names the Poison Man

Sean Names the Poison Man
A brother’s warning
At Northern Cumberland Hospital, Sean Rusk tells Alan that Brian blamed Needful Things and named Leland Gaunt as a poison man who was not really a man.
The pattern becomes visible
Alan connects the boy’s warning to the store’s customers, Polly’s amulet, and the sudden spread of violence. He recognizes that Gaunt has been keeping him distracted while the town unravels.
The Final Confrontation

The Final Confrontation
A revenge trap
Alan returns to Needful Things and watches Gaunt’s videotape, which reveals Ace Merrill causing the crash that killed Annie Pangborn and Todd Pangborn. The revelation drives him toward revenge.
A different choice
Polly stops Alan from pursuing Ace. Together they confront Gaunt, and Alan uses his magician’s skill and nerve to keep the valise and expel Gaunt from town.
